| Local activities | Teulada is just a few km inland and is a very traditional village, situated on a hilltop overlooking Moraira. It's full of charming narrow streets and the 16th century Church of St Catalina is worth a visit. The town also has an attractive, modern 'Plaza' complete with water fountain, cafés and bars. Walking is a popular pasttime in the area, and there are a variety of different routes available, one thing attribute they all have in common however, is breath taking views of the stunning scenery. There are the coastal paths with rock faces and secluded beaches, or head inland to the orange and olive groves and steeper mountains. With Spain being the second most mountainous country in Europe after Swizterland, the region is also a popular destination for hikers. There are some magnificent views and routes on offer from almost 200 small trails (2,500km) in the Costa Blanca. Maps of these trails are available locally. Cycling is a great way to get around and there's plenty of different terrains to keep all enthusiasts entertained. There's some wonderfully quiet road cycling routes and plenty of dirt tracks for the mountain bikers. There are several scuba dive centres in the region, the one we'd personally recommend is the English run Mermaid Diving centre on the Moraira-Calpe road. The calm, sheltered, warm and high visibilty waters around Moraira make this area a really good place for beginners to get their PADI open water certificate. On the l'Ampolla beach there is a volleyball court, a beach soccer pitch, it's also possibly to hire pedal boats. The rocky coastline around the castillo makes for some great for snorkling. Further along the shoreline is the marina, with its sea defences providing an ideal spot for fishing (fishing in the actual marina is prohibited), possible catches include bass and conger. Just inland from the beach is a municipal sports area with 5-a-side football and basketball courts. |

There are lots of things to do locally around Moraira besides sunbathing on the beach, many are mentioned on the resort page in the website and here are a few more..... The traditional weekly flea market takes place on Fridays and should satisfy the baragin hunters and shopaholics. It typically offers a wide selection of items, ranging from fruit and vegetables to clothing, jewelry and textiles. The market is also in Teulada on Wednesdays. For the really genuine bargain hunters and enthusiasts there's also antiques, furniture and paintings on offer at the antique boot fair on Sundays in Teulada. During the summer evenings in Moraira the fun fair is alive with excited children making the most of the fairground rides, the arcade machines, crazy golf, pool tables and mini go-karts. For adults there's also plenty on offer, such as the evening market stalls and street artists, or just a stroll through the bustling and attractive streets of the old town and marina. The Peñón de Ifach (the rock of Calpe) is around 38 million years old and at 332m tall, it's one of the major regional landmarks. Tourists are welcome to visit the museum and the aquarium at its base, or even climb the rock to see some of the 80 different types of birds that make up the smallest nature reserve in Europe. A treat for wine lovers is the Bodega Cooperative Valenciana Virgen Pobre, situated in the Jalón valley this vineyard also produces olive oil, locust beans and almonds. It produces both reds, whites and a specialty sweet dessert wine. Guided tours around the winery are available, and it's possible to buy the produce by the bottle or directly from the barrel. The bodega is situated along the country road between Jalón and and Alcalali. For those seeking some thrills and spills (and not afraid to get wet) it's possible to rent out jet skis from the small rocky beach in between the castillo and the marina. |
